If you are a self proclaimed pack rat, or you have simply decided you have too much stuff and want less clutter, you need to start somewhere.  If you have a bit of a hard time letting go of possessions, a great place to start is with your sock drawer. Below is a pic of my chaotic sock drawer.

Below is a pic of what I would like for my sock drawer to look like eventually (but more colourful).

I saw on Pinterest some tips on where to start with decluttering and a great one is to discard of all the socks who are missing partners.  Now I am not sure if this is a global phenomenon or only happens to those who share laundry facilities or if every laundry machine known to mankind contains sock eating Gremlins.  Last night I went into my socks and found these sad lads missing their partners.

The black socks do not match each other, different textures & design. I am most sad about my Korean soap star socks, pretty sure someone found the mate & kept it for the coolness factor!

While I was fishing out my single socks, I came upon some pairs I wasn’t too fond of, you know the ones you wear with boots and half way through a walk around the block the sock top is uncomfortably wrapped around the middle part of your foot or socks which are too thick. I put together a bag of socks to give away plus my singles socks which I may give away to a thrift shop (crafts maybe?).

I could hold onto my favorite single socks in hopes of finding their mate some day, but I want less stuff. I don’t want to have a box of broken items which need to be fixed or clothing which need repairs.  Either it gets done now or it goes.

This is a brief blog, but I think if you do want to start down sizing with what you own, a great & painless place to start is getting rid of the socks (such as the sad singles) which serve no purpose to your feet anymore.

  1. Oh, I remember having that bag of partnerless socks for years and maybe finding one a decade if we were lucky. I finally tossed it. We actually use those socks as painting rags, but we haven’t painted in years either. Ha! Good place to start. I also need to go for the bra drawer. Not that there are mismatches, just no longer worth keeping. Great post!!
