If you woke up feeling a little under the weather emotionally, you’re not alone.  Today is the third Monday of January for 2017, marking what is known as the most depressing day of the year. 

I was not aware of the phenomenon until I noticed on my twitter feed a lot of posts with the #bluemonday.  So, I researched…

It was Dr. Cliff Arnall, who used to work at Cardiff University who came up with the “third Monday of January” formula based on the month’s dreary weather, the let down after the much anticipated Christmas season, decreased motivation and then debts since Christmas tends to make the most fiscally responsible of us bleed more money than planned. 

2017’s Blue Monday is being called one of the bluest given all the additional stresses as we still feel the loss of some epic celebrities from 2016, the stress & repercussions of the Brexit, as we say goodbye to what many view as an American Icon aka Obama and say hello to a new president many are uncertain of, with Trump’s inauguration days away.  The weather is cold and the Canadian dollar shows no signs of going up. 

How did I conquer this blue Monday?  Above is my warm Canadian ensemble with winter boots, leg warmers and a down coat – I set out early this morning to have an enjoyable staycation day. 

I went shopping with the generous gift card my love gave me & bought a new gym bag from Lululemon. 

Let me tell you, this is one pimped out gym/overnight bag too! It comes with a padded pocket inside for my laptop. A wet/dry bag to put my sweaty workout gear in & you see the long narrow thing which looks like a cheque holder, it is insulated for my flat iron! Say what?  So, I was able to save major moolah as I would never have bought this without the help of my gift card as I don’t need a new gym bag, I just wanted it. And to keep with my support for minimalism I will be donating my old bag. 

Still in great condition, but indeed well used. 

I went for a massage today too, which was more about working out knots and less about relaxing, but it was needed.  I booked myself a hot stone massage which I am very excited to try for the end of January. 

I should have indulged in another salad today, but instead I had chili cheese wedges from iconic Canadian coffee house – Tim Horton’s. Two enthusiastic thumbs up; obviously not counting my weight watcher points today! 

I watched some Gilmore Girls with the cats. 

And then we had a nap.

Now I am up & blogging and I think it is time for a nice Epsom salt bath. 

2017’s Blue Monday was pretty great, and barely cost me anything. It doesn’t have to be the most depressing day of the year if you can keep yourself busy & not overthink what you should be doing (like you should be eating a salad, not chili cheese wedges).
